fishing, tramping......and more! The Department of Conservation is right next door to Makarora Tourist Centre. They have many brochures, interesting displays and information on the Mt Aspiring National Park. There are short walks from the Highway and long treks over mountains. Makarora is the starting point for the very popular Gillespie Pass Trek which takes you up the Young Valley, over the Pass and into the Siberia Valley. "There are brown and rainbow trout in the rivers and deer in the hills!" There are three adventure companies operating from Makarora.
The Siberia Experience is a flight, walk, jet-boat combo in conjunction with the Wilkin River Jets. Here you take a 25 minute flight into the Siberia Valley, cross a mountain stream, walk through native beech forest before being picked up at Kerin Forks in the Wilkin Valley by the jet-boat. Their most popular excursion is a 50km thrilling ride down the Makarora River and up the Wilkin if you want to experience jet-boating at its very best. The jet-boat is launched in the Makarora River and within minutes you are skimming down river over large deep pools or through shallow rips. A hairpin sweep into the Wilkin River leads up river into the mountainous hinterland. This one hour long trip is an amazing adventure amidst native beech forest, pristine river valleys and rugged ice capped mountains.
